Minions are in! Everyone is (or should I say was because it is definitely sold out now!) rushing to Mc Donald’s, queuing up for hours, buying Happy Meals just to get a Minion. They even crash and destroy the doors of McD outlets! Chill fellas! No doubt the little Minions are cute but surely we can have a little self restraint? There is no need to waste food. Buying the Happy Meals just to get Minions and wasting the food is NOT the way to go. There are lots of people going hungry in this world. Show some compassion. At least, if you are not eating those meals, donate it to someone who needs it.
If you really need to have one, let me show you how to make one. It is not that difficult. Promise. You can even customise it any way you want. Definitely better than Mc Donald’s.
But first, get yourself some clay. I use air dried clay in my tutorial. If you want air dried clay, contact me. I sell it too! Without the queue and fuss
Get ready some yellow clay. Roll it to shape and ovoid.
Flatten out some blue coloured clay. Use a scissors or your modelling tool to cut out a rectangle
The width of the rectangle should be slightly smaller than the width of your ovoid.
Wrap the rectangle around the yellow ovoid, snipping away if it is too long.
Now we need to cover the sides. Roll out a little blue coloured clay and cover the sides as shown in the picture. Do the same for the other side.
We are now going to make the straps. Roll out some blue clay to a long snake like shape. Press gently on it to flatten it a little.
Drape it over from one end to the other as shown in the picture. Snip away if it is too long. Do the same for the other side.
Roll 2 little spheres and shape it to make the minion’s feet Stick it below.
Now we are going to add some details to the minions overalls. Use some blue clay to shape a pocket. Use a toothpick or a sharp modelling tool and dot the stitches of the coverall.
If you would like your minion to have 2 eyes, shape 2 round spheres and place it on the yellow ovoid.
If you like you minion to have 1 eye only, shape 1 only.
Add on a spot of brown to create the iris.
Then put a spot of black in the middle. Notice that at this point I also use the black to create buttons on the strap.
Texture the iris using a the modelling tool blade.
We are going to make goggles next. Roll out some grey clay to a short strip. Flatten it slightly and join the 2 ends to make a donut shape.
Use little bits of clay and stick it round the rim of the goggles to make it more authentic. This step can be omitted if you like.
Roll out some black clay to a longer strip. Use the blade modelling tool to create an indent in the middle.
Place the black strap around the minions head starting from one side of the goggles to the other, snipping off any extras.
To make the mouth, you could simply use some red clay to make a small donut (O) shape. Or you could use some black clay to create the cavity of the mouth, some red clay for the tongue and white for the teeth. Shape it to any expression you desire.
Place the mouth onto the minion
Now for the hands. Roll out some yellow clay into 2 small strips
Use a small blob of black clay to shape the gloves. Then use the blade modelling tool to create the grooves to represent fingers.
Attach the hands to the minion, just below the blue straps of the coverall.
Use some black clay to make the shoes of the minion. Simply roll it to a small ovoid and stick it to the feet..
Ta-daa… Use some black clay to make hair if you want Some minions have no hair. You can stop now if you like but I would like to add on one more little detail… and as you will see in the following steps it is really little.
To create the “G” logo on the pocket, roll out 2 small discs of black and blue. Make sure that they are of the same size and it is at the size that fits on to your minion’s pocket.
Use the blade tool to trim the blue disc to a square.
Use the blade tool to make a small slit at one corner of the blue square
Then place the blue square onto the black round disc. Use a little small black clay to create the “hole” in the middle of the “G”.
Place the logo on the pocket and you are done!
Here are 2 of my minions!
So, now you know how to make Minions! Go create an army of them! Not too difficult right?
